Josh Hartnett Leads Netflix's Exhilarating Sea Monster Thriller 'Below': TV Review

Netflix limited series Below brings a sea-monster premise to a small Newfoundland town, built around grief, climate pressure, and the human urge to hold on. Created by Jesse McKeown, it begins in 1986 as nine-year-old Calvin Penney (Azriel Dalman) and his family move from Little Pot Rock to Snook’s Arm, towing their house by boat. After a mysterious incident, Calvin cuts the tow and his father drowns. Forty years later, adult Calvin (Josh Hartnett) lives as a widower in a community where fishing is gone; he and his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) collect ice for a local vodka brewery and run an Airbnb.
