Martin Lewis lists top three things he'd like from John Healey in the Budget
Consumer champion Martin Lewis used an appearance on the Mirror to lay out three priorities he wants Chancellor John Healey to address in the budget due October 28. Lewis asked for action on Plan 2 student loans by reversing the freeze in the repayment threshold. He also wants steps on energy bills, citing forecasts that Ofgem’s price cap could rise by 16% in January and push a typical household bill toward £2,000 a year; he specifically mentioned extending the temporary electricity VAT cut. His third request is clarity on how the state pension will be taxed from next April, when some people will exceed the personal allowance. Lewis referenced an earlier promise from Rachel Reeves that those just above the state pension would not pay income tax.
