Michael overtakes Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, with a worldwide box office now at $911.9 million since its late-April release. Released in cinemas on 24 April, the film narrowly surpasses the 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic, which earned $910.9 million globally. Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a John Logan screenplay, Michael features Jaafar Jackson and Juliano Valdi portraying the singer at different life stages. Domestically, it has set the bar for music biopics, while Lionsgate pursues a second film in development and hints at non-chronological storytelling approaches. The film’s box office performance solidifies its status as a franchise anchor. Lionsgate executives disclosed on a May earnings call that about 25 to 30 percent of a follow-up film has already been shot during prior production activity. Adam Fogelson, president of the studio’s film division, said conversations with key parties are progressing well and that a flexible, non-chronological approach could shape the sequel. The plan may favor a non-chronological approach, allowing new angles while keeping the biopic’s momentum. Attorneys for Michael Jackson’s estate noted a Chandler settlement clause that bars depiction or mention of the accuser in the film.
