Collins debuted for Celtic a year later on the right wing in a League Cup tie at home against holders Rangers on Saturday, 13 August 1949, impressing manager Jimmy McGrory after a public trial the week before. The match drew 70,000 spectators, with Collins tormenting Ibrox defender Jock “Tiger” Shaw in Celtic’s 3-2 win, and teammate Mike Haughney scoring the winner. Collins scored his first Celtic goal midweek and won a winners’ medal at the end of that debut campaign, later adding a Glasgow Charity Cup triumph over Rangers on 6 May 1950.
