Ryan Reynolds says 'Top Gun' made him want to marry a plane

Ryan Reynolds says “Top Gun” left him with a childhood fantasy about aviation—he even joked that he “could marry an airplane.” Reynolds, 49, stars in Apple TV’s Cold War action comedy “Mayday,” streaming Sept. 4. The film, set in 1987, follows Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a Navy pilot pulled into a high-speed SR-71 Blackbird mission into Russia that ends with the plane shot down. Reynolds is rescued by ex-KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), a “Top Gun” superfan. Reynolds praised the original for its wish-fulfillment, while directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley said “Mayday” aims to challenge the cultural assumptions behind Cold War hero myths.
