The highs, lows and whoas of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a record-setting night, led by Madonna’s return and a heavy haul by major pop stars. Madonna won seven awards from 13 nominations, the most of any artist in 2026, including Artist of the Year. She also took video of the year for Fate of Ophelia, best direction for Opalite, and the inaugural Artist Director Honours, becoming the most decorated VMA act in history after surpassing a previous tie with Beyoncé. Taylor Swift added wins too, including video of the year, best direction and inaugural honours, while Olivia Rodrigo beat Australia’s Tame Impala for best alternative. Sienna Spiro won best new artist, and Lisa became the first K-pop solo artist to win best pop. The show also featured multiple high-profile live moments.
