The Pitt' looks to repeat and 'Widow's Bay' could bring an epic wave as Emmy Awards arrive

The 78th Emmy Awards arrive Monday night at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, with NBC staging the live telecast at 8 p.m. Eastern and streaming live on Peacock. Mariska Hargitay, a three-time Emmy winner from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will host as the network marks its 100th anniversary with a peacock-blue carpet. The ceremony also marks 30 years of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 50 years of Charlie’s Angels, with cast members among presenters. HBO Max’s The Pitt, last year’s drama breakout, is expected to contend again for best drama, best actor (Noah Wyle) and supporting actress (Katherine LaNasa). Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay comes in with eight earlier wins and could chase a comedy-record 13 Emmys in a season if it lands more Monday. It may also challenge Hacks’ comedy exit for its fifth and final season, with Jean Smart seeking another win.
