Video. Argentina erupts after late win over England to reach World Cup final
Argentina’s World Cup final push became a national celebration after a late 2-1 win over England sent the defending champions to the final against Spain. Tens of thousands gathered in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, 15 July, after Lautaro Martínez scored two minutes into stoppage time in Atlanta, breaking the match at the last moment. Fireworks and chants filled the city as supporters waved Argentine flags and packed streets across the capital. The late goal also reignited a rivalry marked by the politically charged history between the countries, including the 1982 Falklands War and Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal in 1986. In the Falkland Islands, England supporters watched on Falkland Islands Television, underscoring sensitivities. The dispute over sovereignty over the British overseas territory—Argentina’s “Malvinas”—remains unresolved.
