Video shows massive great white shark eating dead whale off RI coast
A video filmed off the coast of Rhode Island shows a great white shark feeding on a dead whale, highlighting how scavenging opportunities can attract apex predators. The Atlantic Shark Institute reported that the carcass was found near Coxes Ledge, east-southeast of Block Island, and that researchers observed a second great white in the area. The shark captured on film was estimated at least 14 feet long, based on the footage and bite size, according to Jon Dodd, the institute’s executive director. Dodd and Sarah Callan, who manages the animal rescue program at Mystic Aquarium, discussed the find after the whale was located following a 50 square mile search. Great white sightings are described as rare, but they increase significantly around deceased whales because they provide a major food source. The institute said it plans to share more observations in the coming days.
