WWE has been advised to base storylines on the real experiences of its performers, following reactions to WWE Unreal’s portrayal of CM Punk and AJ Lee. Russo said the segment made him feel more connected to Punk and AJ than anything he had watched on WWE programming, describing how their discussion of their marriage and AJ’s openness came across as human, not scripted. He also pointed to their dog Larry as another element that reinforced that authenticity. Russo contrasted this with what he said is a problem inside WWE: performers becoming interchangeable characters who speak and react similarly. He cited Liv Morgan’s background, arguing that including her life story could change how viewers view her, and added an anecdote involving a JCW wrestler who shared being beaten as a child.
