Years Later, New John Dutton Makes Taylor Sheridan's Coldest Yellowstone Quote Better Than Ever

A new spin-off, Marshals, is reframing one of Yellowstone’s most memorable lines attributed to John Dutton. The quote—told to his youngest son Kayce in Season 3, episode 9 (“Meaner Than Evil”)—is: “Learn to be meaner than evil and still love your family and enjoy a sunrise.” The article argues the same ethos resonates across Yellowstone and its related prequels and sequel series, including 1883, 1923, Dutton Ranch and Marshals. It revisits the Dutton family’s internal power struggles—John playing his children against each other, with Beth and Jamie competing for approval while Kayce tried to distance himself—before setting up how the spinoff underscores the meaning of John’s advice.
