Barrow's Furness General patients 'at increased risk of harm'
Barrow's Furness General is grappling with rising demand that threatens patient safety, health chiefs say. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has declared the highest internal alert to enable steps to maintain safe services amid sustained demand. It says Operations Pressures Escalation Levels have reached category four, meaning it cannot deliver comprehensive care. The trust warned it is at a point where continuing as before would increase the risk of harm. Immediate actions include using all available options to the emergency department and cancelling non-essential meetings to free clinicians for patient care.
Public guidance urges people to seek help from the most appropriate services and to attend A&E only for serious emergencies. The NHS 111 service is highlighted for treatment advice, with essential services remaining open for those in need. For patients with appointments, the trust asks those who cannot attend to cancel promptly so slots can be reallocated. Staffing pressures are acknowledged, and hospital leaders say they are coordinating with partners to safeguard care during the surge and ensure critical services stay available.
