Big 12 ADs, commissioner to discuss potential sanctions for Texas Tech, Sorsby

Big 12 athletic directors are set for a call with commissioner Brett Yormark to discuss a judge's ruling that cleared Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play this season. Sorsby had been ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA for gambling-rule violations, including betting on his own team when he was a redshirt freshman at Indiana. The Lubbock County judge granted a preliminary injunction, ordering a two-game suspension that would make him miss the season opener vs Oregon State and Week 2 against Abilene Christian. Conference play is scheduled to begin Week 3 at Houston. Yormark says the ruling has wide implications and could invite conference sanctions, and he planned to meet with the conference ADs and executive board this week. Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said the school would support Brendan’s return and maintain a comprehensive monitoring and compliance program. The call was not planned to include university presidents, with leaders set to meet Thursday. Texas Tech won the Big 12 last season and reached the College Football Playoff, before being shut out by Oregon. Sorsby’s transfer added significant talent to the Red Raiders.
