A Black ICU nurse in Colorado, DonQuenick Joppy, won a significant legal victory after a hospital accused her in connection with the death of a 93-year-old patient. Joppy, 41, said she faced racial discrimination at The Medical Center of Aurora starting in 2017, including being undermined by charge nurses and claims that her transfer application was derailed after she was placed on a Performance Improvement Plan requiring “proper body language and tone” and no complaints. On May 24, 2019, after the family withdrew life support, she alleged a respiratory therapist instructed her by phone to disconnect a ventilator; the hospital disputed it and reported alleged criminal neglect. Charges brought in 2020 were later dropped.
