Breast Cancer Awareness | Early detection most effective tool in breast cancer fight
The Allegany County Health Department in Western Maryland is promoting breast cancer screening as an essential step for early detection. In the U.S., the American Cancer Society estimates more than 320,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The program, which has operated for more than 30 years, reported screening 126 clients during the last fiscal year (July 2025 to June 2026). It works with providers in Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties to help patients access services close to home. Director of Cancer Programs Ellie Folk said the process typically starts with a well-woman visit, possible breast exam, an order for a mammogram, and scheduling with local facilities where testing usually takes under 30 minutes. If results are abnormal, additional diagnostics like ultrasound or biopsy may follow.
