Bus aims to close this city's ongoing healthcare gap with free services
xCruzo Brief
Newport News has launched a Community Health Bus to help close a local healthcare access gap with free, on-the-go services. The red-and-white mobile unit began patrolling neighborhoods in November 2025, created by the Newport News Fire Department in partnership with Riverside Health, Sentara Health, and Bon Secours Immaculate Hospital. Services include initial assessments such as preventive screenings, mental health crisis intervention, and healthcare navigation with referrals. Fire Chief Wesley Rogers said the concept builds on mobile vaccination efforts during the coronavirus pandemic. The bus has earned an innovation award from the Virginia Municipal League, and the department posts event dates for the rest of the year.
