Can a vibrating belt help protect bones and muscle health?
A vibrating belt designed to protect bones and muscle health is being evaluated as a non-drug option for osteopenia. The FDA-approved Osteoboost belt targets post-menopausal women with low bone density by delivering low-magnitude vibrations to the spine and hips. Andrea Bloom, 59, of Pleasanton, California, wears the belt for about 30 minutes a day during her morning dog walk. Proponents say the device mimics aspects of exercise by generating mechanical signals that stimulate bone-building osteoblasts. Its development traces back to NASA-funded work on bone loss in zero gravity, which helped spark early vibration-therapy research.
In a 2024 randomized, double-blind trial of 126 women in their 50s and older, regular belt use reduced spine bone-strength loss over 12 months compared with placebo. The treated group lost 0.5% of spine bone strength versus 2.84% in the placebo group, an 83% reduction in loss. The study led to FDA approval of Osteoboost in 2024. Experts and critics note the findings do not directly measure fracture risk, and several bone-health scientists questioned the way results were described. Osteoboost's backers emphasize the potential for slower bone loss, while caution remains about interpreting the data beyond spine strength.
