Casper radiologist Dr. Joe McGinley swam the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon for the eighth time last week, setting a personal best in the Friday 1.5-mile open-water leg and briefly sharing the water with gray whales. The 51-year-old competed among about 2,000 participants, with the course starting from a boat off Alcatraz to Marina Green Beach, then an 18-mile bike across the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, and finishing with an 8-mile run that included beach sand and a 400-step ladder climb. He has completed Bay swims on nine or ten previous occasions, and Friday's conditions gave him confidence for Sunday.
