Coast Guard rescues 16 people from sea off Mexico's Baja Coast, with more victims reportedly still in water
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 16 people from the sea about 120 miles off Ensenada, Mexico, early Friday, after a boat went under following a distress call at around 1 a.m. The Coast Guard said a total of 27 people were reported onboard, and crews continued searching for additional victims still in the water. A helicopter based out of Ventura was first to reach the site around 2 a.m. and reported finding 16 people. The boat was not located. San Diego Fire-Rescue reported that 13 ambulances transported the 16 patients to hospitals; two were in critical condition and the rest had moderate injuries. Officials said it was not immediately clear whether anyone was wearing lifejackets. The search continued with Coast Guard leadership, plus U.S. Navy support.
