Councillor calls for spot checks to help tackle drugs problem

A senior councillor in Shetland is calling for spot checks by drug-detecting dogs on vessels when they arrive in port, arguing the measure would send a “clear warning” to people tempted to use illegal drugs. Allison Duncan, chair of the community safety and resilience board, made the request after new National Records of Scotland (NRS) figures showed six drug-abuse-related deaths in Shetland in 2025, up from four the year before. Since 2010, Shetland has recorded 43 drug-related deaths. Duncan said drugs in the islands contain “more powerful” opiates and called for expanded education, while backing existing Dogs Against Drugs detection teams and police intelligence-led action. She also urged properly funded NHS rehabilitation support.
