Cyclosporiasis cases increase by 270 in Michigan. No new deaths

Michigan health officials reported a sharp increase in cyclosporiasis cases as of Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 4, while the death count stayed the same. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said 11,508 residents are sickened, up about 274 cases from Monday’s update on Aug. 3—nearly 300 new cases added to the statewide total. Two deaths were reported this week and connected to the parasite, with the toll unchanged. Officials said the illnesses started before the voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on July 17. The CDC said it is aware of two outbreak-related deaths in Michigan with underlying health conditions. Cases are reported in 72 of 83 counties, led by Wayne County with 1,379.
