Docs said I was 'over-dramatic' - but my daughter had deadly illness

A 17-month-old girl, Darcey, was ultimately diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in November 2022 after a prolonged period of symptoms being treated as minor childhood ailments. Her mother, Sophie Sparks, 37, said the child experienced repeated infections, soaring temperatures and persistent coughs and colds, yet was repeatedly reassured as being an “overdramatic first-time parent.” She described care that included treatment for tonsillitis and throat spray in A&E despite temperatures above 40°C, plus episodes where swelling in her stomach and reduced eating were attributed to constipation. After a GP recognized Darcey looked seriously unwell, an urgent assessment at Queen’s Hospital in Romford led to blood tests and a diagnosis within 24 hours, followed by chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital the next day.
