Cyclosporiasis outbreaks are prompting questions about whether freezing fruit and vegetables can kill the parasite, but U.S. health guidance indicates it is not a reliable control method. As of July 14, the CDC reported 1,645 confirmed U.S. cases, with more than 5,100 additional cases under analysis, nearly 100 of them reported in Florida as of July 11. There have been 141 hospitalizations and no deaths, and reported patients range from ages 2 to 95, with a median age of 44; 56% are female. The CDC says the illness is spread via contaminated food or water and can involve direct and person-to-person routes. Investigators linked a separate outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, tied to a Mexico supplier traced by the FDA.
