First English Translation Revives the 1996 Paper That Named Cardio-Oncology
Thirty years after Italian cardiologist Daniela Cardinale coined the terms “cardio-oncology” and “cardio-oncologist,” the journal Cardio-Oncology has published a commentary and the first English translation of Cardinale’s 1996 monograph. The original work appeared in Cardiologia, the official journal of the Italian Society of Cardiology, under the title “A New Frontier: Cardio-oncology,” and was previously accessible only as a citation in PubMed. The new commentary, written by Charles B. Porter and Daniela M. Cardinale, argues the translation shows how forward-looking the original text was, outlining seven elements of the emerging field: operative risk, cardiotoxicity, cardiac monitoring, echocardiography’s role, treatment, secondary cardiac tumors, and future directions. The commentary also describes how changes in cancer care—earlier diagnosis, improved therapies, and expanded surgical options—drove cardio-oncology’s rise as a distinct specialty.
