Hacker Group Claims UNM Hospital Cyberattack, Then Apologizes and Offers Patients $2,500
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center said its information technology teams detected a cybersecurity threat around 11 a.m. Monday and began containment. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., the health system temporarily diverted ambulance traffic to other hospitals in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, while outpatient surgeries and appointments were paused for the rest of the day. Officials later reported that critical electronic systems were back online, with all UNM Health hospitals open and normal ambulance operations resumed. They said the incident affected some end-user devices but did not penetrate core systems or servers. Classes were canceled Tuesday, then resumed Wednesday; a criminal investigation is ongoing. Separately, the BYOD hacker group claimed involvement on a Tor-based leak site and offered decryption keys for hospital-sector devices.
