Incident Diabetes Linked to More Hospitalisations and Death in Multiple
xCruzo Brief
A population-based cohort study using linked records from England found that people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who developed diabetes after their MS diagnosis had worse outcomes than those who did not. Researchers analyzed 47,247 people with MS and 458,951 matched controls without MS, with a mean follow-up of 15.2 years, using data from Clinical Practice Research Datalink Gold and Aurum and linking it to hospital and mortality records. While incident diabetes occurred slightly more often in the MS group (4.48% vs 4.73%), the key finding was that diabetes was linked to substantially higher hospital use and higher subsequent mortality. The study reported an adjusted diabetes incidence rate ratio of 1.16.
