The U.S. military struck an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the eastern Pacific early Monday, killing two people, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). The command said its Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere carried out a “lethal kinetic strike” on a low-profile vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes. The strike is believed to be the first in more than two months, with prior strikes reported after June 21. It was not immediately clear why the attacks in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific paused, CNN reported. SOUTHCOM said the program is part of “Operation Southern Spear,” citing broader claims of an armed conflict against drug cartels.
