Medical AI Competition in China Highlights Potential for ASEAN Health Care Cooperation

A national medical imaging artificial intelligence competition held in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Oct. 22–23 brought together researchers, medical professionals and technology companies to test AI tools for disease detection and to explore health-care cooperation between China and Southeast Asia. The 2026 National Healthcare Security Medical Imaging AI Recognition Competition drew 1,332 registered teams, including participants from ASEAN member states, and 66 entries advanced to the finals. Co-hosted by China’s National Healthcare Security Administration and the Guangxi regional government, the contest featured eight categories, such as lung cancer detection via CT, brain tumor analysis using MRI, and breast cancer screening through mammography. Organizers said differing imaging equipment and scan protocols make portability difficult, so the assessment covered both accuracy and performance across image sources. The event also emphasized clinician-developer collaboration.
