Nanotechnology-Enhanced Hydrogels Revolutionize Drug Delivery to the Eye
A new review highlights how nanofiber hydrogels could change drug delivery to the eye by offering longer-lasting, responsive treatments. With more than 250 million people worldwide living with visual impairment and up to 115 million projected to be blind by 2050, the paper argues these biomaterials—mostly still at the preclinical stage—may improve outcomes in conditions including age-related macular degeneration, bacterial keratitis, uveitis, and chemical eye injuries. Studies in animal models suggest the hydrogels can keep drugs at the target site longer, reduce inflammation, and support tissue healing. The review cites an injectable system extending anti-VEGF effectiveness threefold in mice and another maintaining antibiotic levels on the cornea for over 25 hours.
