Woman undergoes rare quadruple organ transplant at University of Chicago Medicine

University of Chicago Medicine carried out a groundbreaking quadruple organ transplant on Jasmine Jones in January, replacing her right lung, left lung, kidney and liver from a single deceased donor. Jones, 28, has cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that damages the lungs and other organs. Over a 36-hour operation, surgeons completed all four transplants, an achievement described as rare by Dr. Rolf Barth, co-director of the UChicago Medicine Transplant Institute. According to UChicago Medicine and the United Network for Organ Sharing, it is the first known quadruple transplant in Illinois and one of only six nationwide. Five months after the procedure, Jones is back home, reporting she feels “pretty good” after about six weeks in the hospital and two weeks at a rehabilitation facility. She spent additional recovery time at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and hopes to resume activities she loves, including work with preschool students.
