Renowned MGB neuroscientist's efforts to combat Alzheimer's to receive tens of millions of dollars
xCruzo Brief
Rudolph Tanzi, a Mass General Brigham (MGB) neuroscientist who helped discover key Alzheimer’s genes, is set to receive up to $41 million in federal health grants plus $25 million from philanthropists for a four-year study. The project will test five to 10 drug combinations Tanzi developed as potential treatments for the most common form of dementia. Separately, Acta Pharmaceuticals, a Boston biotech cofounded by Tanzi, said last week it raised $24 million in seed financing to start a clinical trial of an experimental medicine from a drug class he helped discover. Tanzi, 68, frames prevention as akin to statins for cholesterol.
