Rhabdo is linked to a NYC marathoner's death. What is the condition?
xCruzo Brief
Rhabdomyolysis, or “rhabdo,” is back in focus after the death of Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old New York City Marathon runner, who collapsed two miles before the finish line on Sunday. Her father, Steve Apa, said doctors spent more than six hours trying to save her. Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle tissue breaks down and can poison the body; triggers include overexertion, physical trauma, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. Cleveland Clinic estimates about 26,000 U.S. cases annually, and Vanderbilt University research cites roughly 1,500 deaths per year. Apa collapsed near the mile-24 mark at 1:33 p.m. ET and was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. ET.
