Shark nicknamed 'Bukangi' foils rescue attempts, returns to South Korean canal
A 3-meter (10-foot) shark nicknamed “Bukangi” has slipped back into a canal in Busan, South Korea, after South Korean authorities spent hours guiding the animal into open sea. The shark, named after the Korean term for Busan’s North Port, became a viral sensation after being spotted in the canal late last month and drew 1.6 million visitors, according to the Busan Infrastructure Corporation. Authorities made three attempts to coax her back; the latest on Wednesday used floating platforms, nets and divers. The oceans ministry said she was successfully guided to open water, but on Thursday officials reported she swam under an installed net, placing her between an outer and a deeper inner net 30 to 40 meters down. Officials opened the outer net and reinforced barriers, while experts said her condition is stable and no further guidance may be needed.
