Spent the day in children's A&E and saw the teen mental health crisis up close
A day spent in Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s emergency department (ED) is used to illustrate the pressure on UK pediatric mental health services. The report notes broader system strain, including claims that thousands of children are treated in NHS hospital corridors, and data showing children as young as six presenting to A&E in mental health crisis, with the 6-to-17 group rising 36% between 2019 and 2025. Another cited analysis from the Royal College of Nursing says half a million children and young people presented to A&E in mental health crisis since 2019, with some waiting up to three days for transfer to a mental health unit. Sheffield sees 68,000 ED patients annually, despite a 1977 design capacity of about 20,000. It posts strong performance: about 90% of patients admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours, and it has been rated “good” by the Care Quality Commission.
