Taking Rybelsus? Here's what you need to know about switching to the Ozempic pill
If you're taking Rybelsus, you may soon switch to the Ozempic pill as part of a broader reformulation of oral semaglutide. The manufacturer is phasing out Rybelsus in favor of a newer oral formulation sold under the Ozempic brand. Both medicines contain semaglutide, but the Ozempic pill is designed for better absorption and uses lower doses than Rybelsus. For patients prescribed Rybelsus, clinicians should evaluate whether a switch to the Ozempic pill is appropriate and ensure the correct dose. The Ozempic brand is now offered in two formulations: the injectable version and the newer oral tablet.
A prescription is required to switch; you cannot automatically move from Rybelsus to the Ozempic pill. Because absorption differs, the Ozempic pill typically delivers similar effects at a lower semaglutide dose. If you are within the first 30 days of starting Rybelsus or taking the 3 mg starting dose, doctors may advise delaying the switch. Dosing adjustments are guided by your prescriber, who will determine when to start the Ozempic pill and how to transition safely. This transition reflects ongoing updates to how semaglutide is delivered, with the Ozempic line expanding beyond injections.
