The shooting of 28-year-old Wilber Garces Perez by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Austin has sparked scrutiny over what hospitals must do when treating ICE detainees with traumatic injuries. After a Sunday incident following a car pursuit, Garces Perez—who and his lawyer say was not attacked without cause—was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center for treatment. However, he and his lawyer claim he received inadequate care and remains in poor condition at a detention center in South Texas with a bullet lodged in his back. Hospital and ICE representatives dispute that claim, while Texas Rep. Greg Casar urged federal agencies to treat his medical care “extremely seriously.”
