They knew when to come': Protesters describe Wangchuk's forcible removal as Delhi tightens security
Protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar described the forcible removal of activist Sonam Wangchuk as Delhi tightened security, alleging police moved quickly to end his indefinite hunger strike. They said between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday, several Delhi Police personnel, some in plain clothes, entered the site and approached Wangchuk, who had been fasting for 20 days. According to witnesses, paramilitary forces formed an outer ring, officers surrounded his mattress, and large white bedsheets were used to block the crowd’s view before he was lifted and carried to a waiting ambulance. Protesters claimed the operation lasted about five to 10 minutes and that police had monitored the area for days. Police said Wangchuk was moved to Safdarjung Hospital on medical advice and directions from the Delhi High Court, adding that officers exercised maximum restraint. Protesters also alleged police tried to reach three other fasting students at the nearby AISA camp and that protesters formed a human chain to block them.
