A 2025 Harris Poll found 42% of Americans have considered moving abroad, but travel insurer World Nomads’ Christina Tunnah says the reality often differs from the glossy view popularized by shows like “Emily in Paris.” Speaking to Reuters, Tunnah recommends a short preview trip to test day-to-day life—commuting, weekend shopping, and day-to-day routines—before committing. She used a week in Hong Kong to gauge fit, ultimately declining a job because she didn’t feel she could “be [her] best,” despite enjoying visits. She also suggests planning neighborhoods, checking rent and transport, considering expat communities, and understanding that travel insurance isn’t healthcare coverage.
