Vietnam's organ transplant sector masters multi-organ, domino techniques
Vietnam says its transplant sector has progressed from single-organ procedures to more complex multi-organ and “domino” techniques. Under the Ministry of Health’s Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, the country now has 34 transplant centres able to perform heart, liver, lung, kidney and cornea transplants. The report says Vietnam has built comparable capacity to leading global transplant centres, supported by improvements in patient selection, donor assessment, surgical coordination and complication management. Multi-organ transplantation places higher demands than single-organ surgery, while domino transplantation involves moving an organ from one recipient to another candidate immediately, if strict criteria are met. The ministry also highlighted liver transplantation research focused on applying, developing and transferring techniques, nominated for the Ho Chi Minh Prize.
