What We Know About the Police Shooting in Madison

The police shooting in Madison centers on a fatal use-of-force incident near the Wisconsin State Capitol that triggered protests and a state investigation. The shooting occurred Wednesday in the Marquette neighborhood, where officers were responding to reports involving a man stealing bicycles and checking parked vehicles, according to officials. Police said the man pulled a knife during a struggle; officers attempted to deploy a Taser unsuccessfully, and an injured officer fired, after which the man was taken to hospital and died. Corey Ruiz, 38, was identified by Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, while a city alderman said he was Black. The Wisconsin Justice Department is leading the homicide probe.
