Which GLP-1 works best? New meta-study puts them head-to-head
GLP-1 medications are pitted against one another in a new University of Georgia meta-analysis that places tirzepatide at the top for weight loss. The study compared tirzepatide (Zepbound for weight loss, Mounjaro for diabetes), semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic), and liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza) across about 14,000 non-diabetic patients. It found tirzepatide achieving more than 20% of starting weight at the highest doses, Wegovy around 15%, and liraglutide about 8%. The authors note tirzepatide is a dual agonist targeting GLP-1 and GIP receptors, while Wegovy and Saxenda act on GLP-1 receptors only. These findings add to the obesity-treatment discussion and spotlight tirzepatide as a leading option in weight management. The analysis did not address weight regain after stopping treatment or differentiate between injectable forms and oral versions. Pooja Gokhale, a Ph.D. student at the UGA College of Pharmacy, says tirzepatide appears to be the better option for weight loss with tolerable side effects. The study also notes strongest responses at the highest tirzepatide doses but did not provide a comprehensive side-effect comparison across all drugs. Overall, the research adds context to GLP-1 therapies and highlights tirzepatide as a leading option in obesity management. Investigating future trials could clarify long-term outcomes and adherence across diverse populations.
