Won't let life-changing crash define me,' says Ripon 20-year-old

Joshua Kay-Shaw, a 20-year-old from Ripon, said he does not want his life-changing crash to define him. Kay-Shaw was studying accounting at York College in December 2023 when the car he was a passenger in collided with another vehicle on Marston Lane in York. He suffered severe brain and spinal injuries, along with fractured ribs, a fractured breastbone and a punctured lung. He spent four months in hospital and now uses a wheelchair. Following the crash, he was placed in an induced coma for four days and underwent surgery on his brain and spinal cord. Kay-Shaw reported chronic pain and ongoing difficulties with memory, concentration, fatigue, sleep and mobility, and said the incident has changed how he lives day to day.
