World's Most Familiar Barcode Is About to Disappear: Why 2027 Could Change How We Shop

The world’s most familiar barcode is set to fade as GS1 Sunrise 2027 launches a shift from 1D to 2D barcodes at point of sale. 2D codes, including QR and GS1 DataMatrix, will carry far more data and transform packaging, scanning, recall management, authentication, and sustainability disclosures. A barcode may soon reveal origin, contents, recycling instructions, recalls, authenticity, and regulatory or environmental requirements. QRNow notes that 2D codes transmit data faster and more richly than traditional 1D codes. GS1, the standards body behind the system, is guiding brands, retailers, and supply chains through this global transition toward a ‘product passport.’
