Yemen Crisis: 600 Displaced Pregnant Women Face Birth Without Hospitals as Aid Funding Collapses
An emergency UN report released October 30 warns that 600 displaced pregnant women in Yemen are expected to give birth within two weeks, often without hospitals, midwives or clean water. The document from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs describes a three-month displacement wave totaling 290,000 people, driven by renewed fighting between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Houthi forces. The report also ties the crisis to the Houthi movement’s control of a strategically sensitive maritime corridor. The displaced total reflects an escalation tracked by the IOM, rising from about 76,000 in mid-September to 268,000 by late October. UNFPA estimates about 3,200 displaced pregnant women since fighting intensified, with at least 600 facing urgent delivery needs.
