Belgium got its tariffs cut. Then it sent Trump a diamond Superman ring
Belgium’s diamond tariffs were cut, and the story quickly turned into a high-profile gift for U.S. President Donald Trump: a jewel-encrusted “Freedom 250” Superman-themed ring. The Antwerp World Diamond Center presented Bill White, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium, with a watch-sized gold ring featuring 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, plus 18-karat gold engraving referencing “250 YEARS USA.” Trump said in a prerecorded video message that it came from “friends from Antwerp” ahead of events in Brussels marking America’s 250th birthday. The AWDC president Isidore Mörsel said the ring is crafted in Antwerp and is meant to symbolize partnership “under pressure.” Belgium’s diamond industry had previously pushed for removal of U.S. tariffs; in September, the AWDC said it secured a zero percent import tariff on Antwerp’s annual exports exceeding $2 billion. A White House official later said the ring had not yet been presented to Trump.
