Drivers didn't start the culture war, but they may win it
xCruzo Brief
A recent Guardian piece by transport writer and train enthusiast Christian Wolmar argues that what’s often framed as a “culture war” against motorists is, in practice, an attempt to make car travel harder to improve conditions for people who don’t use private vehicles. The article points to congestion charges, higher taxes, lower speed limits, restricted parking and limited town-centre access for deliveries. The author says drivers didn’t start the conflict, but have already absorbed increasing control and surveillance, including camera enforcement and parking fines. Still, they keep driving because cars remain the most convenient and often cheapest option for daily needs.
