Every few months, the dance floor at an Austin gay club transforms into a wrestling ring

Austin’s Highland Lounge hosts Uncanny Attractions, a bold fusion of pro wrestling, drag, and burlesque that turns the dance floor into a wrestling ring every few months. Promoter Lynn Frailey, who co-founded the concept with MV Young in New York City in 2018, revived it in Austin in 2022 after pandemic disruptions, turning Highland Lounge into a regular home for the gambit. The shows, inclusive yet distinctly queer, mix wrestling theatrics with performance art and campy drag numbers, creating catharsis amid broader LGBTQ rights debates in Texas. The next event, Cirque du So Gay, is scheduled for August 15, aligning with Austin Pride a few weeks later.
