The family of Nolan Xavier Wells, a Mississippi teenager who died after a July 4 boat trip to Horn Island in the Gulf Coast area, is set to call for greater transparency and a deeper investigation at a news conference Friday. Wells, 18, traveled by boat with friends on July 4 but did not return that afternoon; his body was found early Monday morning, more than a day later. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, retained by the family earlier this week, said the family has concerns about the investigation and planned an independent autopsy. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office officials said investigators do not suspect foul play, but Sheriff John Ledbetter asked for witnesses and any video from about 10 miles offshore. Family members have raised questions after seeing alleged footage of a fight and said Wells was an elite athlete who could swim. Wells attended Southwest Mississippi Community College as a wide receiver. An official autopsy was conducted Tuesday, though results may take weeks.
