FCC says it will move toward 2027 auction of mid-band wireless spectrum | Dunya News
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says it will move toward a 2027 auction of mid-band wireless spectrum, a key range needed to expand 5G networks. The regulator plans to vote on July 22 on an order to auction 160 megahertz of spectrum in the Upper C-Band next year, Reuters reported. A law passed last year requires at least 100 megahertz to be auctioned, but the FCC said it aims to make “significantly more spectrum” available. The FCC expects the auction to generate billions of dollars. The Upper C-Band is currently used by satellite services and aircraft altimeters, so proposed rules include “retrofit rebates” for aviation upgrades and financial compensation to help satellite operators clear a redesigned portion. The FCC also said future users must be able to share the spectrum safely or be shifted to alternative frequencies.
