Gavin Newsom orders threat monitoring after Trump says 'let them take out Los Angeles'
California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered threat monitoring after President Donald Trump’s remarks at a Nebraska rally were interpreted by some as suggesting Iran could “take out” Los Angeles or San Diego. Newsom said Tuesday on X that he directed the State Threat Assessment Center to monitor for possible threats to California. The comments were made Monday in Grand Island during discussion of high prices, when Trump said, referring to the war, that it was “a small price to pay” and urged, “Let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego.” Newsom condemned the statements and called Trump “mentally ill,” while also urging removal through the 25th Amendment. The White House communications director Steven Cheung said the remarks were misconstrued, adding that U.S. cities would have been threatened if nuclear Iran hadn’t been stopped. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, and Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff also criticized the comments.
